Description
Enjoy your delectable and visually striking colorful candy-coated apples!
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or a variety you prefer)
- 6 wooden sticks
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- Food coloring (red, orange, green, pink, or colors of choice)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar (optional, to prevent crystallization)
- Chocolate or white chocolate (for drizzling)
Instructions
- Prepare the Apples:
- Wash and thoroughly dry the apples to remove any wax coating.
- Insert a wooden stick into the top of each apple through the core.
- Make the Candy Coating:
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the granulated sugar, water, and corn syrup. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
- Add cream of tartar if using, and let the mixture boil without stirring until it reaches 300°F (hard crack stage) on a candy thermometer.
- Once it reaches the desired temperature, remove from heat and quickly stir in the vanilla extract.
- Divide the syrup into separate bowls, and add different food coloring to each one. Mix well to achieve vibrant colors.
- Coat the Apples:
- Working quickly, dip each apple into the colored candy syrup, twirling to coat evenly. Allow excess to drip off.
- Place the coated apples on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to cool and harden.
- Add Chocolate Drizzle:
- Melt chocolate or white chocolate in a microwave or using a double boiler.
- Drizzle over the cooled candy-coated apples for decoration.
Notes
- Ensure apples are completely dry before coating to allow the syrup to adhere properly.
- Use a thermometer to ensure the syrup reaches the hard crack stage for a perfect coating.
- Work quickly when dipping apples as the candy coating hardens fast.
- For a flavor twist, add a few drops of your favorite extract (like cinnamon) to the candy coating.
- Experiment with different toppings like sprinkles, nuts, or crushed candy for added texture.
