Creepy skull-shaped hand pies with a fruity “bloody” filling for a Halloween treat.
Ingredients
- Refrigerated pie dough (or homemade)
- Strawberry or raspberry jam (for “blood”)
- Cream cheese (optional for filling base)
- Egg wash (1 egg + 1 tbsp water)
- Powdered sugar (optional for dusting)
- Vanilla extract (if adding cream cheese filling)
- Red food coloring (for extra gore effect)
- Fresh herbs (parsley or mint for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment.
- Roll out dough and cut into circles using a large cutter.
- On half the circles, carve creepy skull faces (eyes, nose, mouth).
- Spread a spoonful of jam (and cream cheese mixture if desired) on the uncut circles.
- Place skull-cut dough on top, crimp edges with a fork to seal.
- Brush with egg wash for shine, then bake 18–22 minutes until golden.
- Drizzle extra jam over baked pies to create a “bloody” effect; garnish with herbs.
Notes
- For a more intense flavor, add a few drops of red food coloring to the jam.
- These hand pies can be made ahead of time and frozen before baking.
